It's been a long time since Eames had to be the subject of a dream. He's been very good to avoid it, given that his subconscious often gives too much of him away without his intentions there (that is, after all, why they call it a subconscious), but in order to properly show Mystique the dreamspace, he's allowed her to be the architect. That said, the moment they hit the dream and the PASIV was working away, Eames had hit the ground running, rearranging his body and his voice and his core balance to become a lovely little blonde number that the hotel had seen fit to introduce to him.

He's honestly beginning to believe the Nexus is his crash course in the minutia of perfect forgery (though not perfect, never perfect. It always helps to have some flaws).

Now, though, he's sitting in a little chair with a drink as he waits for Mystique to find him in the dream, wondering if she'll be able to pick Eames out. If not, then he's more than patient and can wait until she comes around before engaging and seeing what fun someone who can shift in real life can have when there are no rules at all.

This is new and a particular shade of not good that Eames has very rarely considered before. In his time, he's forged men, women, beings of no gender at all, aliens, and an array of animals in order to get inside a mark's head and find their secrets. What he has not done is lost all his clothes as he wandered into Arthur's room at the hotel and found himself in a simplistic mind-set that's only concerned with a few things.

Play being one of them, food another, and affection a third.

He lets out a sad whine as he tries to adjust his mind and remember what movement as an animal is like. There are four legs to account for instead of the usual two and as Eames trots into the room, tail wagging (because he's still very happy to see Arthur), he thinks that this hotel is practically forger academy, forcing him to learn how to work and walk in other forms while in reality.

He should increase his rates. His skills are getting quite the workout.

Settling his chin on Arthur's knee, he gives another plaintive dog-cry, peering up at him with eyes he hopes are every bit as forlorn as he's intending them to be.

I may or may not call you back, dependent on when I pick up my messages. Be a dear and communicate how urgent the matter is quickly?

Despite the awareness that Arthur being annoyed with him is practically a default setting, Eames can't help but feel somewhat responsible for goading him along, this time. And it hadn't even been as intentional as it normally was. He'd worked several jobs back home to keep busy, but eventually even that hadn't helped to keep his mind off what he'd left things as.

And so, that's why Eames has a bottle of Bordeaux wine, and a small canvas painting that's an original, using post-war British modernism as an inspiration to paint a quick little thing that ought to curry some favour. He'd contacted several sources, running through his safest contacts until Yusuf mentioned that he'd heard rumour that Arthur is in Chicago.

Lucky, then, that Eames has been in New York City, laying groundwork for several marks he's working up to con in the future.

Once he's in Chicago, he makes sure that everyone knows he's there. He knows the information will get back to Arthur and Eames has to hope that Arthur is curious enough to come find him. He's settled in the lobby of the Hilton Palmer, peering upwards as he keeps the wrapped painting beside him, handy, and the wine in the other hand.

One way or the other, that wine will be drank tonight.

It's funny how reality can often be the most tricky of all.

Eames has been in a strange hotel not borne of anyone's subconscious for three days, but no matter what door he tries to exit, it consistently brings him back to the starting point in the hotel lobby. Eames would find that perfectly normal, given his predilection for diving into people's dreams and stealing their secrets from them, but his totem tells him that this is reality and no amount of effort has given him the ability to forge.

He's actually managed to find a version of reality that makes less sense than the dreamworld.

Or maybe, maybe he never left the inception job and he's in limbo. Maybe his mind is playing tricks on him. If that's the case, then he's about to do himself in even worse by hooking himself up to the PASIV to go deeper into his own mind. If this really is reality, then maybe there's something he's missed. If that's true, then his subconscious could very well be the answer, if only the projections don't cotton on to the fact that he's controlling the dreamscape.

He's set up shop in one of the guest rooms, stripping off his suit jacket efficiently and draping it over the back of a chair as he lies back on the bed and fiddles with the insertion needle. Once upon a time, he'd feared going to the doctor's office and receiving his shots.

Now, look at him.

It's a living.

The count drifts away and before he knows it, Eames awakes and finds himself in much the same hotel as before with pointed differences. It's almost as though this hotel has merged with the second level of the Fischer job. Carefully, Eames sits up and listens carefully for sounds as he checks his totem (and yes, this dream, he is, in fact, dreaming). "Come out, come out, wherever you are," he coaxes, of whatever's lurking in the shadows.
